Maupin Encounters Kenyan Wildlife, Meets Important Community Members

Friday, 07/15 –
Today Dave Maupin attended a ceremony at the Shepherd’s Home Children’s Sanctuary in Nairobi, Kenya. The affair was in honor of the Quarters for Kenya’s fundraising efforts and commitment to the fight against AIDS. In attendance were several important community members of Nairobi, who play a significant role in the region’s safety and planning. The Chief of Police and major Nairobi City Council members commended QFK’s efforts and dedication. A representative for the Vice President of Kenya expressed appreciation towards the crew’s accomplishments saying, “It is unfortunate that your technology failed you, but all Kenyans are happy that your spirit did not.” Also present at the ceremony, were members from all three Rotary clubs in Kenya. Maupin found it especially valuable to become personally acquainted with the members – he felt it was a significant time in strengthening partnership and contact between the Rotary clubs of both California and Kenya.

In the evening, Dave attended yet another Rotary meeting where he was a key speaker. He read from a letter written by Redlands High school student, Jake Oechsaner, who had developed a pen-pal relationship with one of the Shepherd’s Home orphans. The letter emphasized Rotary’s motto of service above self.

Saturday, 07/16 –
Today the Shepherd’s Home children took a field trip with the QFK crew. Their first stop was a tour of the hotel in which Dave was lodging. The staff at the hotel explained to the children the importance of education and values in the business world. The field trip then continued to the Giraffe Hotel, where they were able to feed giraffes by hand.

Sunday, 07/17 –
In the morning, Dave attended a church service with the 24 orphans. After saying goodbye to the children, the QFK crew traveled to the nearby town of Sigona. Sigona is the location of the future orphan home that will be named, “The Spirit of Charles Kean.”
The day ended with great excitement when Maupin proceeded to Spoalodge, where he will embark on a Safari tour.

Monday, 07/18 –
Today Dave took boat tour on a lake just outside of Nairobi. While on the tour, Dave came across hippos, giraffes, zebras, and impalas. Tomorrow, Dave will attend more Rotary meetings throughout Kenya.
