The Spirit of Charles Kean
Departing July 9th from Redlands, California, our 1980 Cessna Turbo 210 will slowly climb east bound toward the first leg destination of Bangor, Maine.
- The aircraft will be fitted with an internal 200 gallon fuel tank to augment its standard 50 gallon tanks installed in each wing, giving it the ability to stay aloft for up to 17 hours.
- Fuel burn will be 17 gallons an hour with an expected final altitude of 11,000 feet.
- We will cruise at 160 knots, or 187mph, with an expectation that prevailing tailwinds will boost us into 200 mph, or better.
- We will have one aircraft mounted GPS for navigation, with a second yoke mounted GPS as back up.
- We will have a satellite telephone for communication on the ground as well.
- The route was chosen to include the Nairobi stop for The Shepherd's Home, and is not the shortest route around the world, however, we will lay claim to speed record for our class of aircraft on each segment.
-
75% of the flight will be over water.
- The purpose of the flight is to raise awareness of the devastation of the Silent Tsunami for children of AIDS in Africa, casting vision and gathering support in the process of preparation and execution.
- Also, two long time friends will use their experience and passion for aviation to demonstrate "it's a small world after all".
- We will attempt to join Wally Post and Max Conrad, who claimed their record for RTW flights in this class of aircraft in 1938, and 1961 respectfully.
Directions to Airport: From the 10 Freeway, take the Ford Street exit North all the way (several miles, Ford turns into Judson), and then turn right on Pioneer. It turns into Sessums Drive: you'll soon see the airport on your left.
