The Spirit of Charles Kean continues. The strategic objectives in going to Kenya have been met. Important contacts were made with three Rotary Clubs that will result in partnerships with Inland Empire Rotarians, ensuring long-term commitments and access to Rotary International resources for the orphans of The Shepherd's Homes.

Recap from the Pilot, Ron Maines (on that fateful day in Bangor, Maine)
Shortly after take off, the windshield became spotted, and then covered with engine oil. The weather had lifted somewhat, but we were faced with an emergency landing at 800 pounds over gross weight for the aircraft, something that I had not done, ever.

Kenyan Rotary Meetings Continue, Relationships Develop
Westlands Rotary Club of Nairobi was Dave Maupin’s first stop this morning. Introduced as the key speaker of the discussion, Maupin told of Southern California’s Rotary members, and their efforts in the fight against AIDS in Kenya.

Redlands, CA Monday, July 18, 2005
Today Dave took boat tour on a lake just outside of Nairobi. While on the tour, Dave came across hippos, giraffes, zebras, and impalas. Tomorrow, Dave will attend more Rotary meetings throughout Kenya.

Redlands, CA Sunday, July 17, 2005
In the morning, Dave attended a church service with the 24 orphans. After saying goodbye to the children, the QFK crew traveled to the nearby town of Sigona. Sigona is the location of the future orphan home that will be named, “The Spirit of Charles Kean.”
The day ended with great excitement when Maupin proceeded to Spoalodge, where he will embark on a Safari tour.

Redlands, CA Saturday, July 16, 2005
Today the Shepherd’s Home children took a field trip with the QFK crew. Their first stop was a tour of the hotel in which Dave was lodging. The staff at the hotel explained to the children the importance of education and values in the business world. The field trip then continued to the Giraffe Hotel, where they were able to feed giraffes by hand.

Today Dave Maupin attended a ceremony at the Shepherd’s Home Children’s Sanctuary in Nairobi, Kenya. The affair was in honor of the Quarters for Kenya’s fundraising efforts and commitment to the fight against AIDS.

AIDS Relief Effort Arrives in Africa, Finally Meets Orphans
Sometime navigator of the Spirit of Charles Kean flight and advocate for AIDS orphans David Maupin has arrived safely in Nairobi, Kenya. Maupin checked into his hotel last night and has spent today visiting.

TSOCK Goes First Class
Yesterday, ace pilot Ron Maines flew the little Cessna that had been our home for 15 memorable hours back across America to its generous owner, Lynch Butler, in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. Ron's 7.5-hour flight in the Spirit of Charles Kean (TSOCK) was uneventful, as the little airplane purred beautifully all the way back to its hangar.

Flight Forced Down – AIDS Effort Continues
An engine oil leak forced an immediate return to Bangor, ME, airport today, altering the plans of the “Spirit of Charles Kean” flight. David Maupin, navigator, will press on to Nairobi via commercial airliner, bringing hope to orphans of AIDS.

A tip of the hat to The Spirit of Charles Kean Committee member Mike Kobold, who was in charge of the Departure Ceremony at Redlands Airport. As a retired Air Force officer, and American Airlines pilot, he displayed the the professional dedication and execution that has been common for the wonderful committee of volunteers that has been meeting for the past six months. Redlands is Lift Off for African Aids Awareness
The “Flight of the Spirit of Charles Kean” departed from Redlands Airport, Saturday July 9th, at 10 a.m. (see photos) on their eastbound journey that will take them around the world. A crowd of nearly 500 supporters gathered to meet the pilots, see the plane and wish pilot Ron Maines, and navigator, local Redlands businessman, David Maupin, Godspeed. The Redlands Community band, conducted by Curtis Allen, provided a colorful and rousing medley of patriotic music, including the “Navy Hymn”. (Full Article)
